Lois M. Morey papers, 1914-1976.

The Lois M. Morey Papers consist of materials related to Morey's travels and career in Alaska, and materials reflecting her interest in the history of education there. Personal papers include correspondence, photographs, slides, and clippings, as well as notes and research material for a bibliography of archival sources on the development of education in Alaska. Historical materials include a sampling of teacher correspondence, school board meeting minutes, and finance reports for village schools throughout Alaska (1914-1958), a small sampling of Alaskan school bulletins and newsletters (1925-1963), and photocopies of several journals kept by Alaskan teacher Edison Hooley (1958-1976), as well as news clippings and photographs. Also found in the collection are 59 early issues of The Verstovian, a monthly newsletter published by Sheldon Jackson College, Sitka, Alaska.

Lois M. Morey (1901-1998) was born in the Black Hills and received her early education in Crawford, Nebraska. Upon completing a course of teacher's training at colleges in Nebraska and Colorado, she taught in public schools in Colorado. In 1942 the chance for higher salaries and new challenges attracted her to Alaska. There she briefly worked in the Anchorage personnel office of fish packer Libby, McNeill & Libby.
